Thank You David. Gitche Manitou, the Great Spirit of the Ojibway First Nation is a connection I feel when I am out alone with our beautiful nature. There are a few places where the presence of the great spirit can be felt so intensely one can almost experience a true spiritual connection. This photo is taken in such a place; eastern side of the Sleeping Giant, also known as Nanabijou in the legends of our first people. This location is a true treasure. It so dear to not only us, the northwestern Ontarians, but to all Canadians, yet strangely it remains hidden. Several years ago some official panel asked all Canadians in a nation-wide contest to select and vote the seven wonders of Canada. Somehow, the Sleeping Giant came in first with 177000 votes beating the runner up Niagara Falls by more than 90000 votes. Still, the official panel chose to ignore the contest outcome and didn't even list the Sleeping Giant as one of the seven wonders. The rationale was that the Sleeping Giant didn't fit the geographic and poetic criteria. Obviously, none of the decision makers have ever visited this "forgotten" part of Ontario. In other words, it isn't well enough know or "popular" enough. So our stretch of the "north shores" remain a hidden gem, the place where a few venture by word of mouth. Fine by me; When I come to the "Giant", I snowshoe to these places in the the dark to see the sunrise, walk about the frozen wilderness all day without seeing a single person. Only Gitche Manitou, the Great Spirit is present.
